Summary

Rainbow connections is an initiative to give support and a voice to the 2SLGBTQ+ older adults within Vancouver. The idea is that through making a greater effort to include older adults within the community we can improve their physical, and emotional wellbeing. By pairing younger and like-minded members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities with older adults, it is our hope that the lives of each can be enriched while also addressing an apparent lack of programming and services tailored for 2SLGBTQ+ older adults.

This idea started from the notion that the health needs of many older adults were not being adequately addressed. This disparity was further noted when putting this within the lens of the 2SLGBTQ+ community as these two communities are already underrepresented, with the combination leading to an even greater marginalization and sense of isolation. It is our hope that by connecting younger members of the community with the ageing population that the older adults can feel heard and their needs better addressed, while the younger members can gain perspective through the experience and challenges faced by the members of the older adult 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Participants will receive a questionnaire that will be used to curate meaningful connections by pairing up buddies based on personality, hobbies, shared interests, preferred activities and form of communication. To ensure the safety of participants, a background check will be completed prior to pairing buddies. Once paired, buddies are encouraged to shape their own connection experience. Whether it’s a walk in the park, going for coffee, attending community events together, or simply conversing via text or phone-the choices are endless and yours to make. This system is designed to give participants the freedom to pave the way for their connection. Understanding that each individual seeks a connection with a specific level of commitment, this system is tailored to match those with similar aspirations for a genuine and enduring connection.

While the primary objective of this program is to increase the mental and physical well-being of 2SLGBTQ+ older adults, the meaningful connections yield mutual benefits for the younger participants as well. The connections established through this program provide both parties with a wealth of knowledge and insights into the unique perspectives, struggles and triumphs of each generation within the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Through these intergenerational bonds, participants embark on a journey of reciprocal learning, ensuring that the impacts of this program resonate not only within individuals but also extend to the broader 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Next Steps
This innovative program could be seamlessly integrated within existing 2SLGBTQ+ community centers, leveraging their expertise in programming and services. While Vancouver served as the initial inspiration, the adaptability of this concept extends beyond city limits. Its potential isn’t confined to Vancouver alone; implementation in various cities, would foster inclusive connections and well-being on a broader scale.
