Founding and History

CityStudio Vancouver was co-founded by Dr. Janet Moore and Duane Elverum in 2011 to accelerate sustainability in higher education and provide students with direct opportunities to work in and with the city on urban challenges.

Born in response to Vancouver’s plan to become the greenest city in the world by 2020, CityStudio was created with the support of founding academic partner Simon Fraser University and founding civic partner City of Vancouver to engage students in the hands-on work in support of the Greenest City Action Plan.

Since then it has grown into a collaboration between the City of Vancouver and 5 Vancouver post-secondary institutions: Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, Langara College, British Columbia Institute of Technology, and Northeastern University.

CityStudio Vancouver has moved beyond goals of sustainability to also include the City of Vancouver’s Healthy City for All, City of Reconciliation, Engaged City, Renewable City and New Start strategies.
