Highlights from the Studio (Fall 2018)

We are writing with an update from CityStudio Vancouver on behalf of the Executive Director and Board Chair. We’ll bring you these updates once a term to share the most important news highlights and activities.

CityStudio represents a new kind of contract between post-secondary schools and civic government for collaboration, experimentation and civic action. Our promise is to build new relationships that can lead to projects for a more liveable, sustainable and joyful city; some of these projects do lead to permanent solutions and new programs for the city, and all contribute to a culture shift towards inclusion and experimentation that is at the heart of our mission at CityStudio.

Over the past seven years we have been very fortunate to have the extraordinary support of our city leaders and academic institutions SFU, UBC, BCIT, Langara College, NEC and ECUAD.

Now, as we embark on the next four years of work with a new mayor and council, our aim is to dig deeper and find greater impact creating better cities with students inside City Hall.

Best regards,

Duane Elverum

Board Chair & Co-Founder

CityStudio becomes a charity

As of September 1, 2018, the CityStudio Vancouver Society is a registered Canadian charity. We are excited to embark on this next chapter which includes a new four-year agreement with the City of Vancouver.

Join us at HUBBUB #11

CityStudio’s eleventh project showcase will take over the ground floor of Vancouver City Hall on Friday, November 30. Students, faculty, City staff, elected officials and community are invited to see the innovative experiments co-created by students and staff for the city.

Our Truth and Reconciliation journey begins

We are excited and humbled to have recently completed an organizational assessment for Truth and Reconciliation at CityStudio. Now the important work learning how to shift our organizational culture, activities and program offerings begins.

CityStudio is scaling across Canada

A significant aim within our strategic plan is to establish ourselves as a leader in the movement of students inside City Hall. Over the next two years we will build a Canada-wide network of CityStudios that started with Abbotsford (BC), Victoria (BC), Brantford (ON), Waterloo (ON), Corner Brook (NL), Logan (Australia) and Bendigo (Australia).

We are very pleased to share our six-year impact report, featuring the results of our 2011-2017 survey of past CityStudio participants including students, faculty and City staff.
