Summary

Canopy cover is crucial when cities are trying to mitigate climate change. Although street trees are an important element of the urban forest, private trees are the other half of the equation – and they’re in decline. Our project aims to engage and encourage community members in the Victoria-Fraserview neighborhood to foster a strong connection and increase canopy cover on private lands.

We created a phased plan that, by the end of completion (20 years), will result in a resilient community with three times as much canopy cover. This plan can be adopted in other neighborhoods facing similar struggles to improve the urban forest across the City of Vancouver. Some things we created are:

– In-depth site analysis

– Detailed species recommendations for various sites

– One-way and two-way street designs

– Green City Certified brand
