The Vancouver Parks Board is pursuing the “Emissions-Free Landscaping Equipment” B.6 motion, and other sections of the city’s comprehensive “Green Initiative Plan”. This ambitious initiative taken on by the City plans to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world. To do this, the Vancouver Parks Board has stopped purchasing gas-powered landscaping equipment and transitioned towards making more purchases on electric, or zero-emissions landscaping equipment. They are also replacing all gas equipment once they reach their end-of-life. Many service locations that house electric equipment lack sufficient infrastructure to support their quickly growing inventories. There are over 600 gas powered machines that will be replaced by battery powered units in the next two years. The purpose of this project is to provide the framework and guidance to install charging infrastructure for small landscaping equipment for the Vancouver Parks Board. Without the proper infrastructure, all of the people using the equipment will not be able to use it to its full potential. Our recommendation aims to make the transition as smooth as possible by providing a plan for the installation of infrastructure that will support the VPB’s small electric landscaping equipment. The plan is applicable to any location and allows for lower cost, optimization of existing resources rather than capital intensive electrical system renovations. Our solution ensures that ALL of the equipment at every park can be fully charged overnight, and is universal, which means that it can be implemented to any service centre or yard that the Vancouver Parks Board stores this equipment.
