Founding Academic Partner
Founding Civic Partner
The year was 2010 and the City of Vancouver was alive with ambition and plans to become the greenest city in the world. They were asking for big ideas to help make that happen. Our idea was CityStudio. We imagined students – with their hope, energy and enthusiasm – at the heart of City Hall helping to solve the city’s most complex problems. Hearing this, the Deputy City Manager said “Yes!” and the City gave us keys to an office under a bridge…
CityStudio Vancouver was co-founded by Dr. Janet Moore and Duane Elverum in 2011 to accelerate sustainability in higher education and provide students with direct opportunities to work in and with the city on urban challenges.
Born in response to Vancouver’s plan to become the greenest city in the world by 2020, CityStudio was created with the support of founding academic partner Simon Fraser University and founding civic partner City of Vancouver to engage students in the hands-on work in support of the Greenest City Action Plan.
Since then it has grown into a collaboration between Simon Fraser University and the City of Vancouver and five of Vancouver’s public post-secondary institutions including University of British Columbia, Langara College, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Emily Carr University of Art and Design and the Native Education College.
CityStudio Vancouver has moved beyond goals of sustainability to also include the City of Vancouver’s Healthy City for All, City of Reconciliation, Engaged City, Renewable City and New Start strategies.
